I am a Primary School teacher in the State school system. I have been teaching since 2009 and have worked in schools with a wide range of students and families from different backgrounds, different views on the importance of education and different stories to tell. One revelation that changed my teaching practice was implementing this motto into my classroom. Three words. Engage. Inspire. Unleash. Engage the students in their education. Inspire them with my own skills and talents, as well as those of others, so that they can see themselves achieving greatness, and then simply unleash them beyond the classroom as people who have something to contribute to society and impact the world.
I have a strong interest in boys’ education, and also in behaviour management. I also enjoy fostering creativity in the classroom as well as the utilisation of ICT to enhance learning.
A lot of my thoughts and feelings towards education stem from my classroom experience. Some call it the front lines, or the coal face. In the depths and doing the hard work. If anything, I am in the best position to make comment on the impact policies, ideologies, and the latest fad that gets introduced, suggested or recommended for teachers to use. Unfortunately, I am also fairly cynical and so remaining positive in these musings can be difficult.
