2. Write a blog post about why you blog professionally and some of the things you blog about. Share it using the #EdBlogNZ hashtag so the newbies can get further ideas to blog about.
Why I blog
There are a number of reasons why I blog about my profession.
Firstly, I enjoy writing. I like to think that I have a way with words.
Secondly, I need to vent. In this job, no doubt, there are a lot of frustrations, and while one must be very careful to keep professional, it is also quite okay to explain your opinion on matters.
Finally, I’d like to think that by writing about education, that awareness would be raised regarding issues facing us. It is also a great way to connect with other professionals, and share ideas and resources within the profession.
What I write about
There are a huge variety of topics I write about. In general however, I write about things that affect me. Usually I gather inspiration from the latest education news by trawling through Stuff or NZ Herald. Other times, politics makes it pretty easy to come up with something to write about.
More often than not, Professional Development also leads to many posts and resources that trigger my interests.
I also enjoy making tutorials for others, especially regarding ICT, computers, and Google Apps.
Generally most of my blog posts fit within the categories of my site. They are:
- Education
- Teaching
- Resources
- Digital Learning
- Google Apps
I also have a few categories for ‘pop-up’ type events, such as Teacher Wellbeing, and this, CENZ15.
At the end of the day, as with everything, I highly recommend you make it work for you, not you work for it. Write about what you’re interested in, and what gets you going, and you will be able to maintain it. If you try and write about other things that are meaningless to you, chances are, you’re not going to be able to keep it up for very long.
Best of luck!
Awesome post, Al. Thanks for sharing your inspiration. You’ve inspired me to go back to Stuff and start writing about how much of a tabloid it has become. Nga mihi nui
You’ve hit the nail on the head here, Al – “Write about what you’re interested in, and what gets you going, and you will be able to maintain it.” So, so true! 🙂
I guess it’s one of those things. Motivation needs to come from within!
